Text: The detection of antinuclear antibodies (ANA) facilitates in the diagnosis of patients with systemic autoimmune disease. Conversely, the absence of ANA in the serum of a patient with a suspected systemic autoimmune disease makes the diagnosis much less likely. The results of the ANA is reported in two parts; the titer of the antibody(s) and the pattern. The titer indicates activity and the pattern refers to distribution of staining produced by autoantibodies reacting with antigens in the Hep-2 cell nucleus, such as a homogeneous, specked, nucleolar, etc. Examples of pattern and antigen association would be a homogenous pattern due to anti-dsDNA or a speckled pattern being due to antibody to extractable nuclear antigen (ENA) such as anti-Sm or anti-RNP.
