New Bordetella Pertussis PCR test for Whooping Cough

Pertussis Update! (Revised July 15, 2005)

New Pertussis Technology Available
On Monday July 18th, 2005, AMS Laboratory will begin using the Bordetella pertussis PCR testing for whooping cough. The new test code is 0604567. This method will replace the direct antigen test and culture for Bordetella pertussis. The PCR test will be performed on a daily basis with a turnaround time of 24 hours or less, compared to the turnaround time of 7-12 days for culture. This is a marked improvement in patient care.

Increased Sensitivity and Specificity
The Bordetella pertussis culture and the direct antigen test were never more than 50% sensitive. The PCR assay is considered to be within the 83-100% sensitivity range. The specificity is reported to be 97-100%.

Call for Collection Supplies
Specimen collection kits consist of 2 dacron-tipped miniswabs and 2 dry sterile tubes along with full collection instructions. Please call customer service at 265-4533 to request the kit. The specimen should reach the laboratory within 48 hours.
