CPT 2006 Update for Lab, Pathology Codes

Below are the new and revised codes for laboratory and pathology services. As of January 1, 2006, Medicare will not allow a grace period to accommodate coding revisions. The rule requires use of the medical code set that is valid at the time the service is provided. These codes were obtained from the Current Procedural Terminology CPT 2006 book published by the American Medical Association. Questions concerning you utilization of the CPT codes should be addressed with your local carrier/payer, as coding may vary from one carrier to another.

NEW AND REVISED LAB CODES

• 82270 Blood, occult by peroxidase activity (e.g. Guaiac) qualitative; feces, consecutive specimens with single determination, for colorectal neoplasm screening (i.e. patient was provided 3 cards or single triple card for consecutive collections, Revised
• 82271 Blood, occult by peroxidase activity, qualitative; other sources, replaces deleted code 82273
• 82272 Blood, occult by peroxidase activity, qualitative; single specimen (e.g. from digital rectal exam)
• 83695 Lipoprotein(a),
• 83700 Lipoprotein, blood; electrophoretic separation and quantitation. Replaces deleted code 83715
• 83701 Lipoprotein, blood; high resolution fractionation and quantitation of lipoproteins including lipoprotein subclasses when performed. Revised, replaces deleted code 83716.
• 83704 Lipoprotein, blood; high resolution fractionation and quantitation of lipoprotein particle numbers and particle subclasses (e.g. by NMR), New (cross walked to 83716 + 85004, WBC count).
• 80195 Sirolimus
• 86200 Cyclic citrullinated peptide (CCP), antibody
• 83631 Lactoferrin, fecal; quantitative. New, cross walked to 83520 (EIA not elsewhere listed)+87015 (specimen concentration)
• 84680 Tuberculosis test, cell mediated immunity measurement of gamma interferon antigen response
• 87209 Smear, primary source with interpretation; complex stain (e.g. trichrome, hemotoxylin) for ova and parasites
• 87900 Infectious agent drug susceptibility phenotype predition using regularly updated genotypic bioinformatics

MOLECULAR DIAGNOSTIC CODES

• 83900 Molecular diagnostics; amplification of patient nucleic acid, multiplex, first two nucleic sequences
• 83901 Molecular diagnostics; amplification of patient nucleic acid, multiplex, each additional nucleic sequence, Revised.
• 83907 Molecular diagnostics; lysis of cells prior to nuleic acid extraction
• 83908 Molecular diagnostics; signal amplification of patient nucleic acid, each nucleic acid sequence
• 83909 Molecular diagnostics; separation and identification by high resolution technique
• 83914 Molecular diagnostics; mutation indentification by enzymatic ligation or primer extension, single segment, each segment (e.g. oligonucleotide legation assay (OLA), single base chain extension (SBCE), allele-specific primer extension (ASPE)

RENUMBERED CELL COUNT CODES

• 86355 B cells, total count. Replaces 86064
• 86537 Natural Killer (NK) cells, total count. Replaces 86379
• 86367 Stem Cells, (i.e. CD34) total count. Replaces 86587

REVISED HIV PHENOTYPE ANALYSIS CODE

• 87903 Infectious agent phenotype analysis by nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) with drug resistance tissue culture analysis, HIV-1; first through 10 drugs tested
• 87904 Infectious agent phenotype analysis by nucleic acid (DNA or RNA) with drug resistance tissue culture analysis, HIV-1; each additional drug tested (List separately in addition to 87903)

NEW WAIVED TEST CODES

• There are new waived test codes. We did not include this in the CPT update because this is testing that AMS does not perform. If you wish to have a list of these codes please contact Customer Service at 316-265-4533.
